  1. First off I want to say terrific blog! I had a quick question which I’d like to ask if you do not mind. I was curious to know how you center yourself and clear your mind prior to writing. I’ve had difficulty clearing my thoughts in getting my ideas out there. I do take pleasure in writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes tend to be lost simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any ideas or hints? Many thanks!

    • Addie: Apologies for my delay in responding to your question. For the past 20 years, nearly every morning, I sit down and spend 10 to 15 minutes “free writing” before I get to work on my current project. Free writing, as you may know, involves writing by free association without stopping (no lifting pen from the paper) and without editing. This helps to clear my thoughts and open a way to begin writing. Freeing oneself from the internal editor (always asking “is this good?”) often brings up interesting material that I use right away or later.
