ants ranching aphids, oh my

A little more summer bounty

My first garlic harvest! This is garlic from my neighbor Lou, who died back in February at age 82. I planted it in the fall and it has just now ripened into these gorgeous purplish bulbs. It’s a heritage garlic that his mother brought from Austria. Lou grew it his whole life, and his kids grow it too. It’s quite mild. You can just nibble on it raw.

And finally, ants ranching aphids on a zinnia.

In the close up, you can see the clear bubbles of honeydew, which is the sugary stuff the aphids produce that the ants are after, and little white lozenge things, maybe aphid larvae?
